Acrylic nails are created using a liquid and powder, which when mixed together form tough, crack resistant enhancements.

The correct liquid for use on nails contains a substance called EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate).  This liquid will provide a finished nail that looks crystal clear.

However, there is another liquid on the market, which contains a substance called MMA (Methyl Methacrylate).

This liquid is formed for the dental industry and is used for making crowns for the teeth.

It should NOT be used on nails as it can cause irreparable damage.

A good indication that liquid containing MMA has been used, is a finished nail that has a milky white appearance.

In America, MMA has been banned for use in the nail industry.

MMA creates extensions that are too rigid for the natural nail.

It has no flexibility, and will resist breaking if accidentally caught or jammed.

This usually results in painful breakage of the natural nail, often at the cuticle area.

MMA is also resistant to manual filing; so electric files have to be used.

This increases the risk of added damage or trauma to the natural nails.

Some of the more serious risks of using MMA are adverse skin reactions, (i.e. burning sensation on the nails), and permanent nail deformities.

Long term use of MMA may lead to damage to the respiratory system, which is why the technicians using this product will be seen wearing face masks for protection.

Liquid containing MMA is very cheap compared to liquid containing EMA.  Therefore salons/technicians using MMA can offer treatments at considerably lower prices.  (But at what cost to your own nails?)

Please be aware that the acrylic is not good just because it is really strong.  Nail extensions are designed to break off if accidentally banged or caught so that if the natural nail is broken, it can grow back healthily.

If in doubt, ask to see the packaging of the products used on your nails.  Any reputable salon or technician will not have a problem with this request.  If they refuse - then refuse the treatment and go elsewhere
